Reflections on My First Year as a Florist

Happy New Year, lovelies!

I hope this day finds you full of hope for the year ahead and fond memories of what’s behind. I’ve decided my 2018 can be summed up in three words, clarity of mind. It’s amazing the peace and clarity that come when you allow your mind to rest. I officially launched Ida Mayes Floristry in April this year out of a need to commit myself to the pursuit of things I love, things that bring me joy and fill my soul. For those of you who are new to Ida Mayes Floristry, let me backup; Ida Mayes is my “side-hustle” as the kids call it. I am a nurse by day and wedding florist by night and weekends (although my mind is typically occupied with all things floristry). My ideal life includes farmland, a wrap-around porch and row after row of cut flowers.

I kept waiting for the right time to start my business, always thinking there wasn’t enough time in the day to devote to another job, and many days there isn’t, but I finally decided enough was enough of the daily grind I was in. I switched nursing jobs allowing myself some space to breathe and then began to come to terms with the process of building creativity. Things don’t happen overnight, over a year or even over 5 years, it’s a constant climb and you don’t get anywhere without taking those first few steps. So, I decided to simply start with one step.

Step #1: Get a Wholesale Account.
In order to do that, I had to have a business license.

Step #1: Get a Business License
Step #2: Get a Wholesale Account
You know what you need for a business license? A name (unless you’re a “doing business as”).

Step#1: Choose a Business Name
Step#2: Research what “doing business as” means.
Step #3: Get a Business License
Step #4: Get a Wholesale Account

And this is how one step turned into 5, then 10, then 15 first steps and before I knew it, 2018 turned into minorly successful year of side-hustling & doing what I LOVE. Sometimes slowing down to realign your priorities and quiet your mind can result in something so special and unexpected, you’ll wonder why it took you so long to get started.

All that being said, 2018 turned into far more than I ever anticipated for this little business of mine and I am more excited than ever to see what fun 2019 has in store for us. Thank you for your support and encouragement. I can’t wait to start the new year with you!

Hello, Lovelies!

Thanks so much for stopping by our new site!

In case you are new to Ida Mayes Floristry, we are based in Austin, Texas and specialize in floral designs for intimate weddings and private gatherings. Our designs are thoughtful, organic, and unique, emphasizing the natural movement of flowers and the inconsistencies of color, texture and structure within each season.

Whenever possible, I prefer to use locally grown flowers for events but source outside of the Austin area as needed. My floral journey began 10 years ago on a cut-flower farm so supporting local growers is a mission near to my heart. Our goal is to soon own a larger piece of land for growing cut-flowers. I have completely exhausted my flower beds in our current home so land is next on our agenda.

I believe every event should be a celebration and every celebration can be spectacular by incorporating flowers or greenery.

I look forward to working with you and getting to know you on our Instagram page. There is always something in the works at Ida Mayes Floristry and I can’t wait to share it all with you.

Stay a while and explore our new site and feel free to drop us a love note!
